Birth: 1935

Death: 2017

Marylyn Faye (Marsh) Garrett Sept. 10, 1935 – Nov. 20, 2017 Davis Marylyn Faye (Marsh) Garrett passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 20, at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento following several days of declining health. Funeral services were held in Atlanta, Missouri. Born on Sept. 10, 1935, to William and Gladys Marsh, Marylyn grew up with her two sisters on the family farm outside of Atlanta, MO. She graduated third in her high school class, receiving a Curators Scholarship to the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she was awarded a B.S. in Education and a lifetime teaching certificate, and where she met and married her husband, Roger Garrett. Marylyn taught at the high school in Prairie Home while Roger studied at the University of Missouri, Columbia. In 1959 they moved to Waterloo, Iowa. They relocated to Davis with their two children in 1962, where Roger joined the faculty of the Agricultural Engineering Department. Marylyn was an amazing cheerleader for her children, supporting them in their various pursuits, even when these tended in directions much outside her own spheres of interest. Having been a charter member of the Home Pioneer 4-H club in Missouri as a teenager, she was exceptionally supportive and encouraging with their 4-H work. She taught beginning sewing classes, then encouraged her children in their sheep project. Market lambs led to breeding sheep and soon the family was heavily involved in raising and showing registered Suffolk and Hampshire sheep. Marylyn continued raising sheep after her children had outgrown their 4-H sheep projects. She had found a passion which would continue for the rest of her life. Marylyn was a breeder of purebred Suffolk and Hampshire sheep in Davis. She exhibited her prize winning sheep at many county fairs, the State Fair, and the Cow Palace. She was a member of the California Wool Growers Association and the Yolo/Solano BoPeeps. Marylyn consigned her rams at the Willows, Dixon and California Ram sales for the commercial producers in the state and hosted Lamb BBQs at her home for attendees of the Purple Circle Show and Sale when it was held at the Dixon May Fair Grounds. She coordinated the statewide Make it With Wool Contest for many years. She was a passionate 4-H leader who mentored many youth. She offered her barn to in-town 4-H members to raise their lambs, which gave them an opportunity to experience a sheep project. Marylyn and her sheep business partner, Jim Yeager, organized Regional Field Days for 4-H members to expand their interest and knowledge of sheep. They were Merit Award sponsors for Cow Palace sheep exhibitors and formed a Booster group to aid in the support of 4-H Livestock projects in the Davis area. Marylyn had an eye for selecting sheep, skill as a shepherd, and was a very good self-taught veterinarian. She instilled her passion about sheep to all interested people with whom she came in contact. Designing, renovating and redecorating their various homes and rental properties has been another area in which Marylyn showed considerable interest and talent. After realizing their dream home in Davis, her crowning achievement in this regard was turning the old family locker and meat processing plant in Atlanta, MO into a beautiful and original restaurant and event location. She and Roger also designed and implemented a toddlers’ park next to the restaurant as a tribute to her parents, which she then gifted to the community. Generosity to others was one of her outstanding qualities. Marylyn enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques. She was also an avid fan of the Sacramento Kings and a faithful attendee at her high school reunions. Marylyn is survived by her husband, Roger Garrett; her sisters, Louise Gaughan (John) and Roberta Byers (Karl); her daughter, Linda Scheib (Hans); son, Ed Garrett; grandchildren, Lidia Yehia (Daniel), David Scheib (Tabea), Naomi Weber (Logan), Gabriel and Johanna Scheib; granddaughter-in-law, Charlotte Deco*ck; and great-granddaughter, Lore Yehia. She was preceeded in death by her parents, William and Gladys Marsh; her sister, Donna Mae Marsh; and her grandson, Benjamin Scheib. A memorial will be held in Davis on March 24, 2018.
