How many countries accept Palestine as a state?
Of the 193 member states of the United Nations, 139 recognize Palestine as a country, so it still has limited recognition.

As of November 2023, 163 of the 193 UN members recognize Israel as a state, including all G7 countries. Even the State of Palestine recognized Israel as part of the Oslo Accords in 1993.
Bilateral relations
Most of the 139 states that have recognised the State of Palestine have elevated the Palestinian representation in their country to the status of embassy. A number of other states have granted some form of diplomatic status to a PLO delegation, falling short of full diplomatic recognition.
Several major countries that are recorded as not recognizing Palestine as a country are the United States (US), France and the United Kingdom (UK). These three countries stated they would not recognize a Palestinian state until the conflict with Israel was resolved peacefully.

The US has expressed concerns about the political stability of the region and has been reluctant to recognise a Palestinian state until there is a unified Palestinian government.
Iran supports the legitimate defense of the Palestinian nation, said Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a statement on Sunday, according to Tasnim news agency, adding that "the Zionist regime and its supporters are responsible for instability in the region".
Palestine has been granted limited powers over the West Bank and Gaza Strip, while Israel still maintains the overarching authority over the area. Until Palestine can act independently of Israel's rule, it cannot be considered a de facto state.
Was Palestine a country before Israel?
While the State of Israel was established on 15 May 1948 and admitted to the United Nations, a Palestinian State was not established. The remaining territories of pre-1948 Palestine, the West Bank - including East Jerusalem- and Gaza Strip, were administered from 1948 till 1967 by Jordan and Egypt, respectively.

Japan–Palestine relations are the relations between Japan and the Palestinian National Authority. Although the two countries have friendly relations, Japan does not recognize Palestine as a sovereign state but as the Palestinian National Authority.
After the Six-Day War of 1967, it was part of the Israeli-occupied territory of the West Bank. In 1995 Israel ceded control of Bethlehem to the newly established Palestinian Authority in preparation for a two-state solution. Bethlehem is an agricultural market and trade town that is closely linked to nearby Jerusalem.
Following the Oslo I Accord in 1993, the Palestinian Authority and Israel conditionally recognized each other's right to govern specific areas of the country.
The PRC recognised the new State of Palestine on 20 November 1988 and had established full diplomatic relations with it by the end of 1989. China has assigned formal diplomatic staff to Palestine since 1990.
Nevertheless, Egypt was one of the first countries to support the Palestinian Declaration of Independence and officially recognized Palestine on 15 November 1988. During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Egypt has provided significant humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories through the Rafah border crossing.
Italy has yet to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, partly due to a desire to await the outcome of the currently stalled negotiations, and partly because the majority of European Union countries do not recognize it either.
North Korea recognizes the sovereignty of the State of Palestine over all of Israel, excluding the Golan Heights, which it recognizes as Syrian territory. North Korea does not recognize Israel and regards it as an "imperialist satellite" of the United States.
Does a Palestinian passport exist?
The Palestinian Authority passport is available to anyone on production of a birth certificate showing that they were born in Palestine. What constitutes "Palestine" for this purpose is not clear. In practice, only residents of areas under the Palestinian Authority jurisdiction can apply.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is over who gets what land and how it's controlled. Though both Jews and Arab Muslims date their claims to the land back a couple thousand years, the current political conflict began in the early 20th century.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital; Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions there, and the State of Palestine ultimately foresees it as its seat of power.
