WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YORKTOWN

Guest Speaker: Daryl Davis

YHS is honored to have lecturer, author, human rights activist, and race relations expert Daryl Davis speak to our student body on Tuesday, May 28, at 1:45 in the auditorium. Mr. Davis has traveled the world giving lectures at K-12 schools, universities, organizations, and corporations focused on how people from all walks of life can work together and embrace our differences. Central to his work is the question “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” From this lens, Mr. Davis has convinced more than 200 members of the Ku Klux Klan to leave and renounce the organization, collecting their robes as a reminder of the dent he has made in race relations by having conversations. The videos foundhereandhereprovide an introduction to Mr. Davis and his work. The recording will be shared with the YHS Community.

APS Soliciting Feedback on School Health Program

From May 17 to June 7, Arlington County’s Public Health Division, in coordination with APS, invites families to complete a survey on the School Health Program (SHP). School Health promotes a healthy learning environment for all APS students by offering a clinic in every school and the opportunity to achieve a lifestyle that will lead to a satisfying and productive life. SHP strives to provide the best service possible in the school clinics.

To help us understand what we do well and areas where we can improve, please take a few minutes to tell us about your experiences with your student’s school clinic during the 2023-24 school year. All results are anonymous. If you wish to talk with someone about the School Health program, please contact (703) 228-1651.

Fall 2024 Sports Tryout Dates

For planning purposes, most fall sports will begin no earlier than August 5, 2024, with the exception of golf and cheer which might begin as early as August 1. As in past years, dance tryouts will take place in May, cross country will start mid-August, and ultimate frisbee will start approximately two weeks after school begins. Updated information can be found on theAthletics website.

Some of these dates are estimated, but they will not move any earlier. Please note playing a high school fall sport requires a commitment to be present for the duration of tryouts and daily practices thereafter. Families are advised that vacations planned after the start of fall sports will not be considered favorably during the tryout process because there is limited practice time to build a team prior to the start of scrimmages and games in mid to late August.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Identity

Like many racial and ethnic groups, the AAPI community is far from monolithic. Many within these communities are at odds with the terms “Asian American” and “Pacific Islander” for that reason. For example, “Asian Americans comprise roughly 50 ethnic groups, who speak upward of 100 languages including Indian Americans, Chinese Americans, Taiwanese Americans, Filipino Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans, Japanese Americans, Pakistani Americans, Cambodian Americans, Hmong Americans, Thai Americans, Laotian Americans, Bangladeshi Americans, Burmese Americans, Nepalese Americans, Indonesian Americans, Sri Lankan Americans, Malaysian Americans, Bhutanese Americans, and Mongolian Americans — and that’s just some of the diversity that exists.” This articleinvestigates the unifying and divisive aspects of both terms. Read more about Asian American identityhereand about how some groups are reclaiming their unique identities with the term “Pasifika”here.
