Over the years, I've come to realize that those seemingly extravagant coffee house drinks are easily replicated at home, at a fraction of the price with the added convenience of being able to customize the flavors to my exact preference.

One of my year-round favorites is Starbucks' iconic Iced White Chocolate Mocha – a delightful twist on the classic iced latte, where the drink is infused with the rich flavors of creamy white chocolate.

Plus, being able to enjoy it while I'm still home, warm, and comfy in my pj's makes this Starbucks copycat version even better.

What is an iced white chocolate mocha?

Besides being a delectable concoction of pure bliss, this velvety drink is a medley of bold coffee and white chocolate flavors. This White Chocolate Mocha is like a fancy co*cktail without the alcohol - although if you wanted to add a shot of anise syrup, none of us would hold it against you!

What does it taste like?

It's sweet, creamy, and downright addictive. The espresso delivers a delicious coffee kick, followed by layers of the sweet, creamy white chocolate goodness and thick, cozy foam. The contrasting sequence of flavors elevate this drink to an entirely new level of indulgence.

Ingredients & Substitutions

This easy white chocolate mocha recipe calls for just a few simple ingredients all of which are available at a local grocery store.

  • White chocolate sauce: I used white chocolate sauce by Torani. You can also use homemade white chocolate sauce which consists of melted white chocolate chips or chopped white chocolate bars mixed in with a little coconut oil. Note that white mocha sauce is sweeter than melted chocolate so you might need to add a little sugar to your drink.
  • Espresso: Espresso provides the strong coffee flavors which make up the base of this drink. If you do not have a moka pot, French press, or an espresso machine on hand, don't worry, just follow the directions in our post about how to make espresso with instant coffee. You can also use strong coffee for this recipe.
  • Whole milk: I use whole milk because I love the taste. However, feel free to substitute any dairy milk of your preference, ranging from skim milk to 2% milk to heavy cream. Non-dairy alternatives such as oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and cashew milk are also suitable options. Just remember that using milk with very low fat may result in a less creamy beverage.
  • Vanilla syrup: I love adding a teaspoon of vanilla syrup (optional) because it really brings out the white chocolate flavor.
  • Ice
  • Sweet whipped cream. A dollop of whipped cream is wonderful as a topping on top this drink. I once used a scoop of ice cream and it was delicious! If you prefer not to add a topping, feel free to omit it.

How to make iced white chocolate mocha

Step 1: Mix the espresso and melted chocolate

  • Prepare two shots espresso using your preferred method, whether it's a French press, stovetop moka pot or a Nespresso machine. If you don’t have an espresso machine, make the espresso with instant coffee. Mix the espresso, vanilla syrup (optional) and white chocolate sauce.

Step 2: Froth the milk

  • Pour cold milk into a small bowl or glass. Add the vanilla simple syrup. Froth the milk into foam by using a handheld milk frother. You can also use a blender, a handheld mixer or vigorously shake the cold milk in a covered mason jar to create the foam.

Step 3: Assemble the mocha

  • Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour the hot espresso mixture on top. Add the cold frothed milk on top. Mix. Taste for sweetness and add sugar if needed. Top with whipped cream. Serve immediately.

Tips

  • Tinker till its right. For a sweeter drink, add sugar. For a richer taste, add some heavy cream. Use one shot of espresso instead of two if you prefer a milder coffee flavor. I love adding a teaspoon of vanilla syrup for more flavor.
  • Use black coffee ice cubes. This will prevent your drink from becoming diluted as the ice melts.
  • Use steamed milk if you can. If you are one of the lucky few who owns an espresso maker with a steam wand, use it to steam and froth the milk. It gives a much smoother, silkier texture than the other methods.
  • Add white chocolate curls. For a special treat for white chocolate fans, sprinkle the whipped cream topping with white chocolate shavings. To make the curls, slide a vegetable peeler along the side of a bar of white chocolate.
  • Skinny version. You can reduce the overall calories in this drink by switching to a sugarless or low sugar chocolate syrup, using a no calorie sweetener, using milk with less fat, and omitting the toppings.

FAQs

How can I make my own homemade version of white chocolate syrup

In a double boiler over low heat, combine 1 cup of coconut oil and 1 cup of cocoa butter until melted. Add 1 cup of powdered sugar and whisk until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract for that extra flavor kick. Let it cool to room temperature before transferring to a bottle.
