Tourism is good for Galveston. ✈️ 🎡 As summer seekers venture to our beaches this summer, we are reminded of the benefits these visitors bring. Last year, tourists contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the Galveston economy, in many different ways. Park Board CEO Kimberly Danesi recaps last year’s tourism impact report for The Galveston County Daily News below. 📰--As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, the island’s tourism sector is readied for a successful summer season. Galveston is well-positioned to greet and meet visitors’ expectations with a wealth of natural assets from the beach to the bay, world-class attractions and museums, a vibrant cruise port and a variety of significant historic sites. And, what’s good for visitors, is good for residents. The numbers speak for themselves. According to a recently released economic impact report from Pennsylvania-based Tourism Economics, hotel occupancy tax collections set records during the 2023 fiscal year. More than $30 million in HOT was collected. Hotel revenues grew 5 percent in 2023 and visitor spending on the island totaled $1.3 billion reflecting a 9.6 percent increase over last year. This is good news for Galveston residents. Tourism supports more than 30 percent of all jobs on the island. Many who start in entry-level roles in hospitality have opportunities to advance into management and leadership. I began my career at Schlitterbahn Water Parks and learned valuable lessons that continue to help me in my role as Park Board CEO. There are so many pathways to success in this field. There’s more good news for Galveston residents. Last year, visitor spending, visitor-supported jobs and business sales generated $244 million in government revenues. State and local taxes alone tallied $126 million in 2023. If it weren’t for these revenues, each household on Galveston Island would need to be taxed an additional $5,324 to replace the visitor-generated taxes received by state and local governments. Thank you, visitors! The report also states that lodging tax revenue was the largest contributor to the $68.8 million in total local taxes. These visitor-generated tax revenues, not including hotel occupancy tax revenues, tallied $38.7 million in 2023. This accounted for 54 percent — more than half — of the CITY OF GALVESTON’s general fund revenues. It’s important to note that these tourist-generated funds helped support police, fire, public works and parks and rec departments. This year’s economic impact report is a great reminder of the benefits of tourism to island residents. The Park Board and Visit Galveston look forward to continuing the momentum to help make Galveston a place we’re proud to welcome visitors and proud to call our home.Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/ex42u4N9

Park Board CEO Kimberly Danesi shares exclusive insights on attracting overnight visitors and maximizing HOT funds in her recent article for The Galveston County Daily News. 🌴 Learn how partnerships with local hotels and associations are shaping the future of our island destination and read more below.**A key mission of the Park Board and Visit Galveston is to attract overnight visitors. Doing so brings Hotel Occupancy Tax funds to the organizations. These funds are restricted and are dedicated to tourism marketing and promotion. As we all know, tourism is an important part of Galveston’s economic engine. Tourism supports one out of three jobs on the island. Thanks to visitors who come to the island each year, Galveston can support world-class attractions, special events and restaurants that smaller towns without this influx, simply cannot. And we residents can enjoy them year-round.The Park Board and Visit Galveston work in many ways to maximize HOT collections. A key is developing and nurturing relationships with island hotels, condominiums and vacation rentals in order to spread the word about their offerings. Another is to provide their guests with a variety of attractions and activities to experience while they’re here so they’ll be more likely to stay overnight. An important part of that equation is the Park Board’s relationship with the (GHLA). Its 76 members — from small hotels to large resorts, vacation rentals and management companies — help to advise and advocate for tourism on the island.Marty Miles is the current chair of the GHLA. He said he values working with the Park Board and Visit Galveston to help market the destination and put Galveston in a favorable light. He said he appreciates the diligence and commitment from the Park Board to keeping the beaches clean and safe for the public.Miles said he also appreciates that the Park Board and Visit Galveston can share developments in the lodging and vacation rental industry with City Council. This, he says, is for the betterment of the community. He also cites the work the GHLA undertakes with the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association (THLA). THLA is the largest hotel association in the nation and its mission is to advocate for legislation, regulations, resources and a business climate that will promote a strong, vibrant, and growing lodging and tourism industry within Texas.Among its many accomplishments, the THLA recently supported and received increased funding for the state’s tourism agency, Travel Texas. These increased resources mean the agency can further its efforts to promote Texas as a travel destination in an increasingly competitive marketplace.**To read the full article and support the Daily News, read on at https://lnkd.in/e29a3z8D
